Video files to text

MP4 to Transcript

Upload an MP4, MOV or WebM video and get a transcript with real timestamps. Your browser pulls out the audio before upload, so even large videos go up quickly.

How to convert MP4 to text

  1. 1

    Choose the video

Pick an MP4, MOV or WebM file. Its audio track is extracted on your device, so only a small audio file is uploaded.

  2. 2

    Check the minutes

We read the length and show how many minutes it will use before the transcript starts.

  3. 3

    Edit, then download

Fix the text line by line, then copy it or download TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT.

From MP4 to transcript without the waiting

Only the audio is uploaded

The video picture stays on your device. Uploading a compressed audio track takes a fraction of the time and space.

Timestamps you can trust

Each line keeps its real start and end time, ready for subtitles or for jumping back to a moment.

Silent videos are caught early

If a file has no audio track, you are told before anything is charged.

Edits keep the original

Every edit is saved as a new version next to the untouched original transcript.

Captions for your edit

Download SRT or VTT and import them into your video editor or upload them with the video.

Failed jobs are free

If transcription fails, the reserved minutes return to your balance automatically.

Turning an MP4 into a transcript

Why only the audio is uploaded

An MP4 file holds a picture track and a sound track, and a transcript only needs the sound. Your browser separates the audio from the video before anything is sent, so an hour of video usually becomes an audio file of around 11 MB that uploads in seconds.

The video itself never leaves your device. If your browser cannot extract the audio, files up to 25 MB are uploaded as they are; for a larger file, try another up-to-date browser.

MP4 to transcript to subtitles

Because every line keeps its real start and end time, the transcript doubles as a subtitle file. Download SRT for editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut, or VTT for web players, and the captions line up with your video.

If you trim the video after transcribing it, the timing no longer matches the new cut. Transcribe the final export, or shift the subtitle times in your editor.

Recordings that work well

MP4 to transcript works for any video with speech: screen recordings and tutorials, recorded lectures and webinars, saved video calls, vlogs and interviews. MOV files from an iPhone and WebM recordings from a browser work the same way.

A file without a sound track can’t be transcribed. We check for audio before anything is charged and tell you if there is none.

After the transcript arrives

Play the audio next to the text, click a line to jump to it and search for any word. Fix names and terms line by line: your edits are saved as a new version and the original stays untouched. Then copy the script or download TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT.

MP4 to text questions

Do you upload my whole video?

No. Your browser extracts the audio track and uploads only that. If your browser cannot do it, files up to 25 MB are uploaded as they are.

Which video formats work?

MP4, MOV and WebM, plus most audio formats. The file needs a sound track to transcribe.

Can I make subtitles from an MP4?

Yes. Download the transcript as SRT or VTT with the original timing.

How long does it take?

Most videos are transcribed in a few minutes. You can leave the page; the transcript is saved to your account.

Is it free to try?

A new account with a personal email address gets 10 free minutes once, for files up to 10 minutes long.

Can I convert MOV or WebM to text too?

Yes. MOV and WebM work the same way as MP4: the audio is extracted in your browser and transcribed with timestamps.

Can I label the speakers in a video?

Yes. Tick Label speakers before you start, then rename the speakers in the transcript.
